E42Strings01 – Using string to handle text in a natural way.

July 7, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT

The C++ language itself has very little support for strings. But for the last 20 years, the string class has been available. It’s part of the standard library since C++98.

There are a few things to know about the string class. Especially because it has some differences from other container classes in C++. This class will show you:

  • How to create string instances and give them values.
  • How to change strings to get new strings. Even if the new strings are longer than the originals.
  • How to compare strings so you know which order the strings can be sorted.
  • How to convert strings to and from numbers.
  • How to find characters within strings. There are some things you need to be careful with here or you might not find what you expect. You’ll learn about a special value called npos.
  • How to use strings to read input from cin and output to cout.
  • How to access individual characters.

This is an online class that you can attend from anywhere. All you need is a good internet connection and your computer. It will help if you have a large monitor or even two monitors so that you can watch and follow along at the same time. Headphones or earbuds with a microphone are recommended to avoid echos.

This is a live class where you can ask questions if you like. Or you can listen and learn and follow along without asking anything if that makes you more comfortable.

We recommend that you plan to join a few minutes early to give yourself time to connect. Click the Venue, Virtual GoToMeeting, for details on how to join.

This is the reservation that you can attend as many times as you want once you purchase the class session. If there’s no button below to confirm the RSVP, then this class is not yet available. Classes are usually made available a month or so in advance.
